In short
- Google Ads brings visitors as soon as you switch it on, and stops as soon as you stop paying.
- SEO takes months to build and keeps working afterwards.
- Use adverts when you need enquiries now or want to test a market; use SEO to lower what each customer costs you over time.
- Running adverts does not improve your organic rankings. They are separate systems.
The difference in one table
| SEO | Google Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| How fast | Months to build. | Immediate once campaigns are live. |
| What you pay for | The work: fixing, writing, earning reputation. | Every click, whether or not it becomes a customer. |
| When you stop | Results fade slowly. | Visitors stop at once. |
| Where you appear | The map and the organic results. | The labelled adverts above and below them. |
| Control | You influence it; you do not control it. | You choose the searches, the hours and the budget. |
| Best for | Steady, long-term enquiries at a falling cost. | Speed, testing and seasonal peaks. |
When to start with adverts
- You are new and nobody knows you yet.
- You need enquiries this month.
- You want to find out which searches actually produce customers before investing in ranking for them.
- Demand is seasonal and short: you need to be visible for six weeks, not all year.
Adverts need a proper landing page and tracking to be worth it. Sending paid clicks to a homepage with no way to measure enquiries is the most common way money is wasted. See PPC and Google Ads.
When to start with SEO
- Customers already search for what you do, in your area.
- Clicks in your trade are expensive, so every paid enquiry costs a lot.
- You intend to be around for years.
- The foundations are missing: no complete Google profile, no page for each service. Fix those first, adverts convert better once they are in place too.
Why most businesses use both
The two inform each other. Advertising shows within weeks which searches bring real customers; that tells you which ones are worth the longer work of ranking for. And as organic enquiries grow, the advertising budget can be narrowed to the gaps: new services, new areas, busy seasons.
For some trades Google also offers Local Services Ads, which appear at the top of the results and charge per lead. They sit alongside ordinary adverts and SEO, not in place of them.
