In short
- Fixes to things that are plainly broken, a blocked page, a wrong category on your Google profile, can show results within days or weeks.
- Ranking new pages for competitive searches usually takes several months of steady work.
- Google’s own advice to businesses is to allow four months to a year to see the benefit.
- You can tell earlier than that whether it is working, from Search Console and your Google Business Profile figures.
What Google says
Google’s own advice is unusually direct. In its video guide for businesses, “How to hire an SEO”, Google’s spokesperson says that in most cases an SEO needs four months to a year to help a business implement improvements and then see the benefit. Its written guidance on hiring an SEO adds that nobody can guarantee a number-one ranking.
Four months to a year is a broad range because it covers every kind of website. The rest of this guide narrows it down.
What can change quickly
- Things that were blocking you. A page hidden from search engines, a broken redirect, a site that will not load on a phone. Once fixed and re-read by Google, the effect can be fast.
- Your Google Business Profile. Correcting the primary category, the opening hours or the service area can change which map searches you appear for within days.
- Titles and descriptions. Rewriting what people see in the results can lift clicks without any change in ranking.
- Conversion. A clearer page and a phone number that dials turn more of your existing visitors into enquiries immediately.
What takes months
- New pages for competitive searches. A page has to be found, assessed and trusted before it climbs.
- Reputation. Reviews arrive one customer at a time. A steady flow over months beats a burst.
- Authority. Links and mentions from other websites build slowly, and search engines take time to register them.
- A brand-new website. With no history, everything above starts from zero.
A typical pattern
Every business is different, so treat this as a pattern, not a promise.
| When | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| Month 1 | Review, technical fixes, Google Business Profile corrected, tracking set up. |
| Months 2–3 | Missing pages written, reviews being requested routinely, listings made consistent. Impressions begin to rise. |
| Months 3–6 | Rankings appear for less competitive searches. Enquiries can be traced to specific pages. |
| Months 6–12 | Progress on the competitive searches, as pages and reputation mature. |
What decides how long it takes for you
- Where you start. An established site with problems to fix moves faster than a new one.
- Who you are up against. A town with three competitors is not a city with three hundred.
- How quickly changes are made. Recommendations that wait six weeks for approval do nothing for six weeks.
- How much there is to build. One service in one town is quicker than ten in five.
How to tell early whether it is working
Rankings for the big searches move last. These move first:
- Impressions in Google Search Console are rising.
- You are appearing for more, and more relevant, searches.
- New pages are being indexed.
- Views, calls and direction requests on your Google Business Profile are going up.
- Enquiries mention finding you on Google.
If none of those has moved after three or four months of real work, ask why. A good agency will already have told you.
