In short
- Shopify is a hosted service: a monthly fee, and the technical upkeep is done for you.
- WooCommerce is free software added to WordPress: more freedom, and the upkeep is yours.
- For SEO, both are capable. Catalogue structure matters far more than the platform.
- Choose on how you sell and who will run it, not on what is fashionable.
The difference in one table
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A hosted shop you rent by the month. | Free, open-source software that adds a shop to a WordPress site. |
| Costs | A subscription, plus apps and payment fees. | Hosting, paid extensions and someone to maintain it. |
| Ease | Simple to set up and hard to break. | A steeper start; more to learn. |
| Flexibility | Works within Shopify’s structure. | Almost anything can be changed. |
| Upkeep | Security, updates and hosting are handled for you. | Updates, backups and security are your responsibility. |
| Content | Adequate pages and blog. | WordPress is excellent for content. |
| SEO | Good. Some address formats are fixed. | Good. Full control, which needs using carefully. |
Choose Shopify if
- Selling products is the main purpose of the site.
- Nobody in the business wants to look after software.
- You want to be trading quickly.
- You value reliability over fine control.
Choose WooCommerce if
- You already have a WordPress site you are happy with.
- Content matters as much as the shop: guides, articles, a large information site.
- You need something Shopify’s structure does not allow.
- You have someone, in-house or hired, to maintain it.
What about SEO?
Neither platform will rank a shop for you, and neither will stop you ranking. Shopify fixes parts of its page addresses and can create duplicate addresses for the same product; both are manageable. WooCommerce gives total control, which means more ways to get it wrong and a tendency to slow down as plugins are added.
What decides ecommerce rankings is whether there is a well-made category page for each way people search your range. That is the same job on either. See ecommerce SEO.
Changing your mind later
Shops move between platforms all the time. Products, customers and orders can be transferred. The risk is to search visibility, because every address changes, so a move needs a redirect plan like any other site migration.
